Why Should I Use an Insurance Broker When I Can Go Straight to the Insurance Company?

Why should I use an insurance broker when I can go straight to the insurance company?

You have more options

The first and most important reason is that an insurance brokerage firm generally has a relationship with many insurance companies. Therefore most brokerage firms are able to compare plans offered by a number of insurance carriers. This allows the agent more options so that they can find the perfect plan to fit the individual’s needs. If you go straight to the insurance company your options for coverage will be limited to only the plans they offer. Captive agents work for an insurance company, and only sell that company’s products. Independent insurance agents, or brokers, represent several companies.

You get individual attention

Brokerage firms are typically smaller than insurance companies. This allows them to give you more individual attention. Agents from brokerage firms are able to spend more individual time with you. When you use a brokerage firm you can usually have the same agent assist you with all of your insurance needs.  Most insurance companies are very large and they expect their employees to limit the time on the phone with clients. Some insurance companies do not even have agents who sell their plans, but use brokerages or independent agents to sell their products.

You get professional services

Insurance brokerage in the United States is a regulated industry.  Every state requires insurance brokers (agents) to be licensed. They are required to obtain separate licenses to sell life and health insurance or property and casualty insurance. In most states, sales agents, in order to become licensed, must complete pre-licensing courses and pass state examinations. Research shows that brokers play a major role in helping small businesses and individuals find health insurance in more competitive markets.  Brokers provide services beyond insurance sales, such as assisting clients with renewals and helping with questions regarding their coverage.  Sometimes they can even help with claims issues. Often a broker can intervene on your behalf regarding issues you may be having with your insurance company.

I was recently contacted by one of our clients who had a claim issue yet could not get a straight answer from the insurance company.  Our agency was able to contact the insurance company who simply needed more information. We were able to help the client understand why the insurance company was questioning the claim. Once the additional claim information was received by the insurance company the claim was paid.

You don’t pay any more for these amazing services!

The premium you pay for your insurance plan is the same whether you go to an insurance agent or insurance company. Yet you get personalized service and more options to choose from when you go to your broker.

So why not use an insurance broker and get the one-on-one service you deserve.
