How Much Money Do You Need to Start a Business?

A question I get asked frequently is how much money is required to start a business.  It’s probably on e of the toughest questions to answer because there are so many variables involved.   My usual answer is that it takes anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to several million.  Why such a wide margin?  Well if you are interested in opening a manufacturing plant such as a solar manufacturing company, it’s going to take millions of dollars.  On the other hand, if you are planning to open a pool cleaning service it might only take a few hundred.  Let’s take a look at some of the variables of starting a business.

 Technology

  • Obviously if your business is going to be online you will have technology requirements that where you will either need expertise or money to outsource.  But even if your business is primarily offline, you will need to have some online presence via a website or blog.  Let’s assume you sell products or services and need a 5 to 10 page website in the beginning.  Here are the costs involved:
  • Website development will be anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 and maybe more.  It just depends on what you need.  One thing to keep in mind, however is that if you have some time, you can buy some really cheap, good looking templates and create the site yourself.  It just takes time and a lot of patience during the learning process.  If you can get by with creating a blog, the process using WordPress is extremely easy and they have tons of plugins you can add for additional functionality.  Make sure you explore this option to see if you can use the technology.
  • Domain name fee.  This will be around $10 for a year.
  • Hosting fee.  This is a monthly fee and will be around $15 per month.
  • Merchant services fees.  If you accept credit cards for your products or services then you have to have a merchant services account.  Look for companies that don’t require an upfront fee in the beginning.  The monthly fee will be around 2.5% of your total sales.
  • Shopping cart fees.  If you have products or services that people can buy online, then you will need a shopping cart.  You can get free shopping cart systems but in many cases they will have limited functionality.  A good pay shopping cart system will cost you about $100 per month.

Business Licenses

Depending on how you structure your business the cost of setting up your business structure and getting your licenses is inexpensive.  You can create an LLC for less than one hundred dollars.  Your Federal and State tax ID’s are also really inexpensive, usually under $20.

Marketing

Marketing can range from zero dollar marketing tactics, such as free classifieds to very expensive advertising such as Television.  Marketing is one area, in the initial stages of your business where you can substitute money for time and energy.  For example, you can easily produce a video market it free on your website or videocast directories.  The major expense will be your time and energy in creating the video.  This includes all of your ads.  It’s easy to let a graphics design person create all of your content for you, but will be very expensive in the long run.

Marketing is one area where you need to do some research to find the best tactics and strategies.  Overall, if you are on a shoestring budget, you can initially do it for free regardless of whether you operate an offline or online business.  If you want to produce all of your ads yourself, you may want to invest in a desktop publishing program such as Microsoft Publisher as a tool to help you create your ads.  These applications cost anywhere from $75 to $500.  On the other hand, you could always get by initially with PowerPoint to create your ads.

Training

You may want to consider ordering some training materials to help you along in the areas where you are weak.  You can expect to pay anywhere from $10 to a couple hundred dollars for some great introductory training.

Insurance

In a lot of cases you don’t need to order business insurance.  I definitely recommend insurance in cases where the public can get injured from your product or service.   The cost of insurance is dependent on your industry.  I owned a sports bar once where I had to pay $24,000 per year in Property And Casualty Insurance.  I know of some surgeons that pay up to $100,000 per year in malpractice insurance.  Those industries are more of the extreme examples because of the liability involved, but you need to do some research for your industry.

Fixed Overhead

If at all possible, in the early stages of your business work out of your home so you can avoid making big monthly payments for your lease and utilities.  There is enough going on in the early stages of your business than to deal with the worry of making these payments.  If your business requires leased retail or office space, you usually are required to come up with first and last month lease payment as well as a security deposit.  You will also be required to pay a utility deposit to your electric and gas companies.  You will definitely be required to carry a minimum amount of property insurance as well.  You can see that it starts getting expensive fast and if you’re in the start up phase, it’s a lot of added pressure – that is, of course, you are well financed.

Development of Your Product or Service

Don’t forget to count the money required to develop or buy your initial product or services.  Obviously this is different based on the type of business you go into so you would need to do some research to find out.

Overall, these are the primary cost factors to consider when starting your business.  Again, if you are a do-it-yourself person then you can start a lot of different businesses for a few hundred dollars.  If you prefer to outsource these tasks, then you will spend somewhere in the thousands to start your business.

I am looking to get appointed selling property and casualty?

I am currently licensed in health and life and I am wanting to expand my borders into vehicle and homeowners, or possibly change over to that line all together. How do I go about this? Are there any companies that will provide the training to acquire my license if I come to work for them? Any information would be great, especially a website. Thanks in advance!

There are companies that do this. However, you can do this yourself fairly inexpensively (around $100 self study). Go to http://www.adbanker.com . There are many options to get licensed. I chose self study and passed my exam with a score of 92%. I continue to take my CE courses through them as well (classroom so I don’t have to take the “monitored” test).

Property and Casualty Licensing Exam?

Does anyone know the difficulty level of Property & Casualty Licensing exams for the insurance industry (particularly the CT exam)? I am starting a new job where I will have 2 weeks of training to prepare for the exam then I will have to pass in 2 tries or else I will be terminated. Has anyone taken this exam? How hard is it?

How do you measure difficulty level? You have to KNOW the stuff, cold. You can’t bluff your way through.

It’s not as hard as the CPCU courses, but it’s equal to some of the master’s level university courses I took.

If you have no backround, and no experience, you’ll be hard pressed to pass with only two weeks studying.

Insurance Continuing Education Illinois

The rules that govern continuing education in different states are quite different, and there are a lot of changes in the way CE is treated in various states. For instance, a state like Maine might require just one compulsory course – Insurance Ethics, while a state like California might require five different topics to be covered, failing which the license would not be renewed.

In Illinois State, there are two required courses
1.Flood Insurance Training, and
2.Long Term Care Insurance Partnership Plan.

Apart from them, there are various kinds of insurance optionals which can be chosen as per the advisor’s interest. These optional courses can be broadly classified into life & health courses, And Property And Casualty courses. Since most insurance advisors anyway specialize in one of these kinds of insurance modules, it makes absolute sense to divide them into two categories and name them as optional. However, the compulsory subjects above are common for all kinds of insurance advisors.

Earlier, advisors had to head down to their nearest authorized insurance training institute and relearn the concepts in order to keep their certifications active and their licenses valid. However, with the advent of the internet, it is now possible to get Illinois Insurance Continuing Education certificates right from your home. The number of hours for each course has already been prescribed, and the material has been put online by the best authorized certification portals. All certifications from those sites are valid according to state laws as they are sourced from a reputed training and certification company.

The best part about Insurance continuing education Illinois is that it is quite economical when compared to the fees charged by an institute. While an advisor might spend a couple of hundred dollars on re-certification every couple of years, online, it might just cost him a few dollars! Think about the kind of savings which happen in the long run! For instance, one of the internet’s leading insurance continuing education sites charges about $ 1 per hour; and for a compulsory course like Flood Insurance training, the cost would be just $ 3 (as the course is a 3 hour one). What’s more; the course can be read free of cost and the exam can be taken free of cost. Only when the advisor passes the examination will he have to pay the fees of $ 3 so that the certificate can be issued! Beat that if you can – anywhere in Illinois!

Illinois insurance continuing education is also very important to gain knowledge of new laws, rules, and regulations for the agent. Stay current so you can suggest the best products and services for your clients. If you stop learning, they will find a knowledgeable agent that hasn’t. We suggest doing your insurance continuing education in Illinois online. Because of how fast, easy, and affordable it is, most agents use this source to gain all of their required insurance CE hours every two years. Complete your CE hours online today from your couch!

Applying for an insurance support personnel position?

Right after graduating from high school I took a summer job with State Farm Insurance. I took the Property and Casualty test and passed on first attempt within the first month working there. I only worked until August because I was going to start at the university and just wanted to focus on my studies.

Now I applied for a part-time job at American Family Insurance, but its been over a year since I had my last insurance related job. I probably forgot many things there is to know about the certain policy restrictions and so forth. Therefore, I’m assuming one of the things I will be doing is talking to customers about policies if I get hired. Will I probably be briefed on the certain things I need to know to interact with clients?

The company that hires you will train you on their policies and procedures.
